Notes on the origin of Google Earth

Here’s the nugget for the impatient reader:

The idea of Snow Crash inspiring Google Earth is only vaguely true. To the extent it is, it isn’t the Metaverse we were talking about, but the pan-optic Earth application from the novel. However, in truth, many of us were thinking about this stuff long before we read Snow Crash.

The stronger link between Google Earth and on-line Virtual Worlds is the fact that many of the team have/had a background in similar areas (e.g., John Hanke, CEO of Keyhole, was one of the people behind Meridian 59, one of the first online 3D worlds; I came from Disney Imagineering and several VR startups; Michael Jones had similar experience through SGI). In reality, we built the application to be a true virtual world, with a feeling of "presence," if not "self" (body), from the beginning.
